Domaine Gayda is not only a place where wine is created, but also an environment where nature maintains its balance. We care for the wildlife that lives nearby and observe its life through the changing seasons.
Wildlife at Domaine Gayda
As winter sets in we see a change in the presence and behaviour of our wonderful birds. The first exciting sighting was the first small flock of Hawfinches that I saw last week inder our Almond Tree eating the fallen nuts.
Amazing to see how such a small bird can crack open the nuts with ease. In the fields around we start to see small flocks of Redwings, Bramblings and Fieldfares that are a real sign of winter.
One thing I notice in the surrounding fields are more and more Grey Herons and Giant Egrets, sometimes as many as 20 in one field. I can not be sure what they are feeding on? In the skys the peregrines and sparrowhawks are regular sightings as are the recently resident black shouldered kites.
The red kites seem to be very numerous this winter with flocks of up to 20 feeding together in the field around Gayda. Interesting now to see our resident buntings and finches now foraging for seeds as the insect population decreases in the winter.
