News from the Vineyard – December

It’s been quite a year, and I am hopeful this year’s wines are going to be particularly special vintage! With our red wines well into their secondary fermentation (known as malolactic fermentation), we’re looking forward to a calm last month of 2025 in the vineyard, where we will be immersed in the quiet but essential work of winter.

The vines have entered full dormancy, and winter pruning is now the main task—slow, careful work that shapes next year’s growth and strongly influences the vines’ yield and quality.

We are hoping for some good rains this winter as replenishing the groundwater reserves is critical. Let’s also have some nice, sharp frosts  to get rid of any hiding spores or larvae hiding in the bark of the vines. We haven’t had much snow for the last few years but this is always a great way of letting the water penetrate deep into the soil without any erosion.

As this is my last blog before Christmas, I wanted to thank you for all your support over 2025 and to wish you all a truly wonderful Christmas! Here’s to an outstanding 2026!
